As you approach Hengshan Temple - the largest buddhist temple in northeastern China - the sight of a towering Guanyin statue, standing ten stories high, greets you like an old friend.

This isn't just any statue; it's a beacon of serenity and grace that sets the tone for your visit.

I felt extremely small, yet enlightened as I stood at the feet of this ginormous statue.

This sacred site is not just a sight to behold for the eyes but also a spiritual haven steeped in history. Hengshan Temple is dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, who embodies compassion and kindness—values deeply rooted in Chinese culture.

Pictured below, you’ll find me standing in front of the four Guardian Kings.

The Four Guardian Kings are significant figures in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, believed to reside on the lower slopes of Mount Sumeru. They are known as Vaishravana (North), Dhritarashtra (East), Virudhaka (South), and Virupaksha (West), and were the first Indian gods incorporated into Buddhist narratives. These kings are often depicted in Buddhist art, particularly at temple entrances and in mandalas, typically portrayed as armored warriors. Among the four, only Vaishravana is singled out as an individual meditational deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, associated with wealth and prosperity.

I was accompanied by two Chinese colleagues from my university - Dalian University of Finance & Economics. They shared the story of the statues that were a mix between guardians and kings.

The temple serves as a pilgrimage site for Buddhists seeking solace and enlightenment. Its intricate architecture and serene ambiance offer a glimpse into China's rich religious heritage.

As you wander through this awe-inspiring place, you’ll find a large vegetarian cafeteria that serves delicious meals to nourish both body and soul.

Trust me; Hengshan Temple is an enchanting destination that offers beauty in every season.

The temple's beauty is absolutely undeniable. I was in awe as I trod respectfully on the cobblestone of this sacred ground.

So, my empowered explorer, if you desire an experience that combines cultural richness with natural beauty, Hengshan Temple should be at the top of your travel list.

I’m gad I added it to mine.
